English is at the heart of everything we do and is comprehensively covered throughout the curriculum in all lessons. Knowledge and skills are taught through creative and engaging lessons that encourage and inspire children.
The skills that we teach prompt children to be imaginative, curious, adventurous, articulate, reflective and confident learners. Good quality resources are used to good effect, supporting the children’s questioning skills, encouraging deeper thinking and a greater depth of understanding. The teaching of English (including reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar, speaking and listening) are taught through topics.
Reading, writing speaking and listening are delivered across the curriculum, thereby fostering a love for the spoken and written word. Children are encouraged to be reflective talkers as well as reflective thinkers. This is done through discussion, questioning and collaborative experiences. English skills such as spelling, punctuation and grammar are embedded in all that we do. Children learn to write for a range of purposes – for example: instructions; recounts; letters; lists; poems and creative stories.
Throughout the school, pupils have access to a wide range of high quality books genres and texts. They are encouraged to read as much as possible at home and during the school day. All the children have access to our library and each child may take a book home each week. Parent helpers run this lending scheme.
We teach Phonics from Reception all the way through to Year 2. We follow the Kinetic Letters Handwriting Scheme and, when children have mastered correct letter formation, they begin to join the letters. We hold parent workshops to share information about the curriculum and the way it is taught in school so that learning may be supported at home, too.
As English is such a broad subject, it is constantly being taught across the curriculum on a daily basis. Please look out for more detailed information in the termly newsletters sent home by class teachers.
